Carsten Wieland - German artist, writer, author of books about watercolours.
He was born in Essen, Germany.
Carsten Wieland studied graphic design at GHS Essen until 1990, and from 1991 to 2011 he worked as a freelance graphic designer. During this period he worked in the field of illustration, cartoons, comics, game design and various book and film projects. In 2011-2014, he was intensively involved in 3D photography.
After several years in 3D photography, he rediscovered watercolour painting in 2015 and since then has created hundreds of works. Watercolour is so fascinating to the artist that Wieland gives master classes, writes books on this topic, makes videos and participates in numerous exhibitions across Europe. Since 2018, Carsten Wieland has also been seen at various watercolour festivals in Europe, where he inspires dedicated audiences by demonstrating his unique watercolour technique. He actively participated in international exhibitions in many countries: The Netherlands, Poland, Italy, Australia, Ireland, Spain, Vietnam, and the United States. He is a member of the jury of the German Watercolour Society (DAG / GWS) and the Freedom Ukraine 2023 festival. He is currently the German director of one of the largest watercolour festivals in the world, "FabrianoInAcquarello" in Italy. Wieland created the watercolour group "Do You Speak Watercolour?", an international watercolor competition that brings together artists from all over the world and supports new talents.

"Watercolour is a universal language expressed with brushstrokes, colors and water, especially when I can transfer my soul to paper" - the artist's artistic approach.

Carsten finds motifs in his surroundings, but mainly in his memories. In particular, the old and abandoned houses he discovered while traveling in the United States became a common motif for his watercolours. The artist focuses not on the detailed reproduction of what he saw, but on reinterpretation, in which the original motif only gives a push to the creative process.

Carsten Wieland's watercolour art - is a fascinating interaction of technique, emotion and vision. Carsten Wieland has mastered the art of color transparency. The colours are bright and translucent, which gives his works a unique brightness. Every brush stroke in the artist's works is precise and careful. His landscapes are not just images. They carry a certain mood - whether it is the peace of a forest or the dynamics of a stormy sea.

Wieland cleverly exploits the properties of watercolor. He plays with wet-on-wet techniques and dry brush techniques. This creates complex images that captivate the viewer.

ROSA's partnership with the artist began at a meeting in Bologna at the Fabriano in Acquarello festival in the spring of 2023. Carsten Wieland immediately liked the materials from the ROSA brand.
That was the first time Carsten Wieland tried ROSA watercolours and has been using them in his works since then. We are glad that we have the opportunity to be a partner of watercolour events organized by the artist, one of them is the Do You Speak Watercolour Award, an international watercolour competition that brings together artists from different countries. The author participated in the Masters of Watercolour exhibition in 2023.

We are grateful to Carsten Wieland for the partnership and for his help in developing the ROSA brand on the international art market.
